CONGRATULATIONS TO CHERRY VALLEY!

The Route 20 Scenic Byway Program

The New York State Scenic Byway Advisory Board has unanimously approved the application for designating U.S. Route 20 from Duanesburg to Lafayette as a New York State Scenic Byway.

Many thanks to the Village, Town and Planning boards of Cherry Valley, the Cherry Valley Chamber of Commerce, Otsego County board, Otsego County Tourism, the Springfield town and Planning boards for their support in bringing Route 54 (the old Cherry Valley Turnpike) to be recognized as a designated scenic byway.

The Advisory Board’s recommendation, made July 20, 2004, now moves the project to the state legislature for final designation, possibly this spring of 2005.

Cherry Valley’s Route 54 is co-designated as part of the Historic Cherry Valley Turnpike.  With designation, Cherry Valley will have funding available for projects that enhance and promote the Route 20 corridor; as a Visitor Information Center on Route 20 across from the Tepee.

Update: We have applied for a grant to build a Visitor Center on Route 20.  We will hear whether we have been accepted in spring of 2005.

The Route 20 Scenic Byway and Cherry Valley Turnpike Designation has been approved by the Senate (bill 5262), and was passed by the legislature during the spring session. We are waiting for the signing of the bill by Governor Pataki.

SHARE-IT PROJECT

SHARE-IT  is a grant-funded project headed by the Village of Sharon Springs with the village of Cherry Valley and the towns of Sharon and Cherry Valley.  SHARE-IT  stands for “Save Historic Assets and Renew Economies by Inviting Tourism”.  Trustee Dorothy Reiberg is our Village representative.

The project seeks to define an integrated strategy for tourism development, economic diversification and resource management.  This is driven by the need for stronger local economies and concern over how future changes may effect this area.  The project will produce recommendations on tourism investments, marketing strategy, single and joint-community actions, sources of funding for each project and information on how tourism will ‘fit’ into the area and encourage other forms of economic investment.

SHARE-IT will build on projects already started, such as the gym renovation at the Old School, as well as identifying potential new ideas.  Working together our different municipalities will be able to more easily obtain grants to fund projects to enhance our communities.  If you have any questions or comments, please contact Dorothy Reiberg at 264-8335.
